While Slough has long been the subject of relative, mostly unjustified, ridicule, the town has earned positive recognition as the top commuter town in the UK, according to the Telegraph’s rankings. Residents of Slough have long awaited an opportunity to shed the town of its negative image, and that moment appears to have arrived, after surpassing Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex and other contenders to the coveted number one spot.
With an estimated population exceeding 164,000, and accommodating more than 17,000 jobs across 400 businesses, Slough is one of the most ethnically diverse satellite towns in the UK. But despite having royal neighbours and international renown, decades of mockery and scornful associations have long cemented Slough as an often-slated settlement.
The town has endured a long battle to regain its reputation, stemming from its prominent feature in John Betjeman’s 1937 poem, “Slough”, in which Betjeman candidly expressed a desire for the town’s destruction by bombing. The conflict persisted when the town was later portrayed as the humdrum setting for Ricky Gervais's 'The Office' in 2001.

But, The Telegraph has ruled that the town is worthy of reassessment after analysing over 3.6 million variations before concluding in Slough’s favour. These variations included: travel times, house prices, annual and daily transport costs, proximity to outstanding primary and secondary schools, green spaces, train overcrowding, distance from the coast and the number of pubs and restaurants within two kilometres of the station.
The list went on to rank Basildon, Laindon, Maidenhead and Rochester in the second to fifth positions respectively. The town’s excellent commuter connections put motorists on the M25 within a brief ten-minute drive, offering access to all major motorways extending out from London.
Additionally, the M40 is 5 miles away, providing a direct route to the North of England. Commuters using the efficient train links to London can reach the capital within a speedy fifteen minutes, courtesy of direct services to London Paddington via the Elizabeth Line. Not only that, but Slough’s convenient 7-mile proximity from Heathrow Airport further solidifies its status as the best commuter town for those in need of easy access to international and national travel.
But it’s not solely the commuter connections that puts Slough on the map. The housing market in Slough is notably more affordable than its neighbouring counties, such as Surrey and Buckinghamshire. According to data from the property website Rightmove, properties in Slough had an overall average price of £438,830 over the last year, well below the Berkshire average of £501,040.
The majority of sales in Slough during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average of £392,180. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £499,017, with flats fetching £236,266.
Slough also boasts more than 40 schools rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. Notable schools include Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College, Eden Girls School and Langley Grammar School, to name just a few.
In 2021, Slough Borough Council submitted a planning application to revamp the town’s Queensmere Shopping Centre, with provisions for up to 1,600 new homes, 15,000 square metres of commercial space in the town centre and 40,000 square metres of office space to reinvigorate investment and retail activity within the heart of Slough Town Centre. Subject to approval, the shopping centre could be demolished in late 2023.
There is also a framework for public spaces, including a new town square, an urban park, and new green areas with pedestrian connections.

On paper, Slough arguably have the hardest task. Scott Davies’ men sit 19th in Vanarama National League South, while 2022 Trophy winners Bromley are second in the National League.
With their league fixture at Taunton last Tuesday called off due to a waterlogged pitch, the Rebels hastily arranged a friendly with Thatcham at Arbour Park, losing it 2-1.
From playing the Kingfishers, Slough now take on the Ravens at their Hayes Lane ground, where a large crowd is expected.
More than 2,500 saw the Kent club beat Rochdale 1-0 last Saturday, thanks to a late goal from substitute Olufela Olomola.
Their top scorer is 32-year-old Michael Cheek with 10 goals, and it was he who netted Bromley’s winner when they beat Wrexham 1-0 in the 2021-22 FA Trophy final at Wembley.
“It is a competition we would like to win again,” said Bromley manager Andy Woodman, who was left “devastated” when they lost at Bath in the third round last season.
“I am really looking forward to it (Saturday’s tie). I’ll be taking it really seriously.”
Slough also made their exit at the third round stage 12 months ago, losing 1-0 to Taunton at Arbour Park.
However, Hungerford and Maidenhead both made progress, with the Crusaders beating Heybridge Swifts on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while the Magpies triumphed 3-2 at Hemel Hempstead. Both went on toreach the last 16 before making their departures from the competition.
Like Slough, Hungerford will also go into their tie as the underdogs with the Southern League Premier South Division outfit taking on an Aveley side who fourth in National League South.
But Danny Robinson’s men are on a tremendous run of 11 unbeaten games and will be riding high on confidence as they head around the M25.
They won 1-0 at Tiverton last Saturday and then drew 2-2 at Basingstoke on Tuesday, with Sam De St Zroix netting in both games, giving him three goals in as many matches.
The Essex side have had a little wobble in the past week, losing 4-3 at home to Farnborough last Saturday after conceding three goals in the final 15 minutes and then being held to a 2-2 draw by 10-man Welling on Tuesday, with United having their keeper Reice Charles-Cook sent off five minutes before half-time.
Maidenhead will be up against National League rivals Dorking at Meadowbank Stadium, the sides sitting 13th and 17th respectively in the table.
Alan Devonshire’s men are on a good run of form, with four wins and two draws in their last six games, the only unbeaten team in their league over this period.
Last Saturday, they hammered Oxford City 4-1 at the RAW Charging Stadium with wide player Sam Barratt bagging two of the goals. The Reading-born former Bracknell Town player, who is on loan from Barnet, was rewarded with a place in the National League’s team of the week.
The Magpies won 2-0 at Dorking in the league game at the start of the season.
All winning teams in the third round will earn £4,500 from the FA Prize Fund, with the losers collecting £1,250. The fourth round will be held on January 13th.

Bracknell Town, Maidenhead United, Reading FC and Slough Town (assuming they can get through a replay with Ebbsfleet United) will all represent Berkshire in the First Round, a rarity for Reading especially who are far more used to joining the action in later rounds.
Here at Football in Berkshire we had an assumption it had been a long long time since a side other than Reading FC had gone the furthest of any team in the Royal County in the FA Cup.
We couldn’t think of any moment in the last 20 or so years – given their then-Championship status Reading usually started in the FA Cup Third Round Proper – but we were fairly sure it must have happened at some point.
So where do you go when you have a question about the FA Cup? Why, Phil Annets – or as he’s more commonly know on Twitter – @FACUPFACTFILE.
But what about the last time FOUR Berkshire sides were in contention for the First Round? That seems like quite a rarity as well.
Phil managed to answer both these questions with the same answer. 1982/83. 40 years ago.
Phil replied with: “In 1982/83 Reading, Slough Town, Windsor & Eton and Wokingham Town were all in the First Round of the FA Cup. Of those four, only Slough Town made it to the Second Round.”
The Rebels beat Millwall in the First Round before going out to Bishop’s Stortford, losing 4-1. Bishop’s Stortford themselves were the ‘giantkillers’ of Reading who that same season were relegated from Division Four to Division Three.
To round it all off, this was the same season Wokingham Town famously took Cardiff City to a replay, losing 3-0 at Ninian Park after a 1-1 draw at Finchampstead Road while Windsor & Eton were beaten 7-0 by Brentford.

All that means then is we could be in for a record-breaking FA Cup season for Berkshire. Even if Slough can’t get past Ebbsfleet, it would still be a rarity for more than one club from the Royal County to reach the FA Cup Second Round.
It is certainly a tall order though for all three non-league sides with league opposition awaiting. Bracknell have been to the First Round on two previous occasions – most recently against Ipswich Town last season – while Maidenhead are serial First Rounders, haven’t been to the Second Round since 1886 when they were beaten 3-2 by Dulwich after extra time.
Between 2017 and 2019 Slough made the Second Round twice in succession losing to Rochdale and Gillingham while Reading famously made the semi-final in 2014/15 narrowly losing 2-1 to Arsenal.
