But Cullen only won one game all week, leaving his qualification for the prestigious World Matchplay in Blackpool next month in doubt.

The Bradford man went up against the unfancied Graham Hall in his first match at PC17 on Tuesday, but made an awful start and quickly fell 5-1 down.

Cullen rallied with some superb darts to close the gap to 5-4, but Hall held his nerve in a scrappy 10th leg to claim victory.

The best performance of the week from Cullen came in his PC18 opener, where he took on Scott Wiliams and raced into a 3-0 lead.

He never really looked back from there, closing out a routine 6-3 win with an average of 96.48.

And when the Wyke native won the opening leg of his last-64 clash against Jitse Van der Wal, with an average of 115.62, he looked to have found his groove.

But he fell apart thereafter, allowing the Dutchman to romp to a 6-2 victory.

Cullen hoped to pick himself up at PC19 on Thursday, but he came unstuck immediately in a thrilling first-round match against Gabriel Clemens.

The Belgian moved into a 5-3 lead, only for Cullen to produce two sensational legs to take the match into a decider.

But both players look nervous in that 11th and final leg, with Clemens eventually falling over the line to claim a 6-5 victory.

As for the World Matchplay qualification standings, Cullen is currently sat 23rd on the PDC Order of Merit, so is unlikely to make it in via that method, as he needs to be in the top 16.

That means he needs to be in the top 16 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit in order to be one of the 32 players at the Winter Gardens event.

Cullen currently sits 13th in those standings, with just two more qualifying events to go, PC20 and PC21 in Leicester, where a couple of wins should be enough to get him to Blackpool.

The 38-year-old has spent the majority of his career in the Premier League, making over 250 appearances in the top tier. However, he also has plenty of experience in the Championship and first helped Bournemouth reach the play-offs in 2021.

Although the Cherries failed to earn promotion that season, his form earned him a spot in the EFL Championship Team of the Season, and a move to Everton followed. However, he played second fiddle to England number one Jordan Pickford and opted to join Queens Park Rangers on a one-year deal at the end of his contract in 2023.

The former Bosnian international enjoyed an excellent spell at Loftus Road. He featured in all-but-one of their 46 league games, prompting the Hoops to attempt to extend his stay. They failed to agree terms though, which saw Begovic return to Everton last summer.

Leicester will return to the Championship next season following their relegation from the Premier League. They are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper to add to their squad following the release of both Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen. Meanwhile, first choice shotstopper Mads Hermansen has emerged as a target for West Ham United.

It appears as if the Foxes are keen on Begovic to at least add options to their goalkeeping department, but face competition from Southampton. The Saints are also in need of reinforcements between the sticks following the release of backup goalkeeper Joe Lumley, whilst Aaron Ramsdale is expected to leave St Mary’s this summer.

Despite being in the twilight of his career, Begovic is still a fantastic option for a club operating in the Championship. He knows that it is likely that he will have to accept a bit-part role but he can still provide a fantastic platform for younger players in the squad to learn from. There are not many teams in the EFL that would turn their noses up at having such a safe pair of hands on their bench to turn to in case of injury. This could be a great signing for either Leicester or Southampton.

The man who started his career at Pompey and went on to turn out for the likes of Chelsea, Bournemouth and Everton is now a wanted man along the M27, according to reports.

Asmir Begovic could be back at Fratton Park next season - as a Southampton player, according reports.

The former Blues keeper is said to be wanted by their fierce rivals, as he becomes a free agent this summer and leaves Premier League Everton.

Begovic is also being eyed by Leicester City after their relegation to the Championship alongside rock-bottom Southampton, who endured a dismal top-flight campaign.

The man who turned out for Pompey at the highest level after coming through the ranks at Fratton Park, spent last season as a back-up to England’s Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park.

That came off the back of a full 2023-24 season with QPR in the Championship, where the Bosnia & Herzegovina international got 46 appearances under his belt.

Begovic, who is now 38, is said to be content with taking on another understudy role as his career heads towards its sunset, according to Football Insider report.

The 6ft 5in man came through the ranks at Fratton Park, being recruited when he arrived on trial from Canada and was immediately offered a deal after impressing with Spurs also interested.

Begovic gained exposure to first-team football at Macclesfield, Bournemouth and Yeovil, before being given his Pompey debut at the end of the 2008-09 season in a 3-1 Fratton Park win over Sunderland.

The following season saw Begovic make his Blues breakthrough in earnest under Paul Hart, going on to make 17 appearances as his club became the first Premier League side to go into administration.

The keeper was then sacrificed with Pompey in financial meltdown - and the bemusing situation of Spurs demanding £1m for a player they never owned in a long-running financial wrangle.

The Londoners were keen on bringing in Begovic for a second time under Harry Redknapp, but the Canada-raised man pushed for a deal to join Stoke City - where his career hugely accelerated.

Begovic never wanted to leave Pompey, however, and was known at time to have been extremely emotional over being forced out.

Speaking to The News over those events in 2021, he said: ‘Begovic told The News: ‘I didn’t want to leave Pompey. I was playing regular Premier League football, I was in a great environment, we’d had our first child and just moved into our first home.

‘Working with Dave Coles, I was pushing, pushing, pushing to keep progressing. Then bigger things took over. It wasn’t that I wanted to go – I had to go.

‘I had done really well in the first-team and was 22 at the time. If you’re playing in the Premier League at that age, you become a big potential asset.

‘Considering the financial trouble the club was going through, when January came around I understood I was probably going to be sold some way, somehow.

‘I don’t know all the ins and outs of what was happening at Pompey, but we knew two or three of us had to be sold to bring in enough funds for the club to survive.

‘My daughter, Taylor, had been born in St Mary’s Hospital in August 2009, while just before that my wife and I had brought a home in Bursledon.

‘The location was ideal considering training was at Eastleigh. It was a nice area for us to try to put some roots down – but that got turned upside down very quickly.

‘It was a Thursday, we were having a team lunch, when I received a phone call telling me a bid had been accepted for myself and Younes Kaboul from Spurs. My medical was the following morning.

‘I had to pack a bag and head up to London to stay in a hotel that evening. All I could say was “Okay”. It happened incredibly fast.

‘I was leaving Pompey, I didn’t have a choice. But I made sure I had a say in where my next step took me. It was vital I made the right decision.

‘I chose Stoke instead.'

A former Leicester City academy product is set to become the subject of a £2million bid from Championship promotion hopefuls, Blackburn Rovers.

Sidnei Tavares joined City's youth set-up in 2010, eventually going on to make three senior appearances for the club in the Premier League and Europa League during the 2020/21 campaign.

These include a combined 85 minutes against Burnley and Brighton along with a 10-minute cameo against Slavia Prague. The Portuguese midfielder would return to his native country as part of a free transfer to Porto, eventually turning out for the club's B side, not making a single appearance for the first team.

Blackburn finished seventh in the Championship last season, missing out on the play-off position on the final day of the season.

But, under the tutelage of Valerian Ismael, the club will be hoping Tavares can bring depth to a squad hoping to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Twenty-three-year-old Tavares featured 33 times for Portuguese top-flight side Moreirense last season after joining the club for a fee believed to be in the region of £400,000.

Now, according to Football League World, who cite Alan Nixon, the former Fox may be on the verge of a £2million return to England, where he struggled to find first-team football previously. The story is also carried on Sky Sports News.

The Cascais-born central midfielder has represented his nation at both U18 and U19 levels though is yet to earn a senior cap, making him eligible to also play for the Cape Verde national team due to his dual nationality.

If the deal materialises, Tavares would become manager Ismael's second summer signing, after Dion De Neve, who joined from Belgian Pro League side, Kortrijk for an undisclosed fee.

The coach is understood to be overseeing a significant rebuild to get the former Premier League winners back into England's top flight.

Tavares would join club captain, Lewis Travis, John Buckley, Sondre Townsend and Adam Forshaw as part of the club's middle-of-the-park options.
